Let Life Sing: Honoring Donors This Donate Life Month

May 6, 2025 | Good Guys, Good News Tampa, Health & Fitness, Programs & Events

This April, LifeLink of Florida joins the nation in celebrating National Donate Life Month, an annual observance coordinated by Donate Life America to highlight the critical need for organ, eye and tissue donation and to honor the selfless individuals who give the gift of life.

The Need Has Never Been Greater

More than 100,000 people in the United States are currently on the transplant waiting list, including over 5,500 Floridians. While the need remains great, LifeLink of Florida continues making a meaningful difference. In 2024, the organization saved more lives than ever before. Thanks to the generosity of 361 organ donors and their families 936 lifesaving organs for transplant gave patients in end-stage organ failure a second chance at life. These outcomes reflect the power of donation and the compassion of those who say “yes” to giving others renewed life.

A Mother’s Story: Finding Hope Through Donation

Kolanda Daniels knows firsthand the impact of organ donation. A Tampa resident, mother of five and employee at Tampa General Hospital for nearly two decades, Kolanda became a donor mom seven years ago when her son, James, tragically passed away at 28 due to complications from a severe asthma attack. James was a passionate photographer, father to two daughters, Tamylah and Londyn, and a source of joy to all who knew him.

Guided by compassion and support from LifeLink, she chose to donate James’ organs, a decision that saved four lives through the donation of his heart, liver, corneas, skin and kidneys.

A year later, Kolanda met Ken, the recipient of James’ heart. Using a stethoscope, she listened to her son’s heart beating through Ken’s chest, an emotional moment that brought her peace. Today, she and Ken remain in touch, a testament to the legacy of her son’s selfless gift.

How to Get Involved During National Donate Life Month

LifeLink of Florida encourages Floridians to register as donors and discuss their decision with loved ones. Anyone, regardless of age or medical history, can sign up, and a single donor can save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of 75 others.

This April, Floridians can “Let Life Sing” and honor the lasting impact of organ donors by:
